Zhang Zeduan, Along the River During the Qingming Festival (detail), Northern Song, early 12th c.: the Kaifeng of our actors.
When do we think “network”?
The things you study are interdependent: the connections matter, and are required to understand what is going on.
after Weingart, “Demystifying Networks”, Part I
Historical sources are full of relations:
Correspondence
Teacher–student, same exam year師生、同年
Marriage and kinship
Named together in a text
Places linked by routes
Texts citing or copying texts
A network turns relations into something we can count and compare.
節點Nodes
The “stuff” we study: many individuals of one type (also called vertices, actors, agents).
Node types in historical research:

Attributes let us ask later: do connected people also share a native place or an office?
邊Edges
Relations between nodes (links, ties). The type of relation must be defined up front.
Undirected: symmetric (kinship, alliance)
Directed: a letter from A to B, a citation
Weighted: 12 letters, not 1
Multiple types: both colleagues and in-laws
Every choice is a historical judgement: is “same exam year” an edge? Is one letter a tie?
One kind of node, or two?
1-mode: one type of node. 2-mode (bipartite): two types, and edges only link across types.
單模 1-mode:同現於一份文獻 co-named in a document
Most centrality algorithms were designed for one-mode networks.
Run centrality on a bipartite network in Gephi: it works, but the numbers do not mean what they usually mean (Weingart).
Background: reform and opposition in Northern Song
1069
Emperor Shenzong backs Wang Anshi’s New Policies.
1070s
Sima Guang, Han Qi and others oppose; Sima Guang retires to Luoyang to write the Zizhi tongjian.
1085–86
Shenzong dies; Sima Guang returns and reverses most reforms (the Yuanyou period).
1094–
Zhezong takes over; Zhang Dun and reformers return, Yuanyou officials are banished.
1102–04
Huizong takes the throne and relies on Cai Jing, who continues the reform line. To eliminate rivals, Cai Jing lists opponents of the reforms as a “treacherous faction” and has the list carved in stone (the Yuanyou faction stele). By 1104 it names 309 people and is sent to the prefectures; those named are barred from office and the capital, and their descendants are restricted.
→
The “faction” was politically manufactured, so we can ask: were the people on the list really connected? This is what De Weerdt et al. study with network analysis.
“New” and “old” are labels; people like Su Shi and Ouyang Xiu are hard to classify.

Degree
How many direct connections
誰最活躍 who is busiest
Betweenness

誰是橋樑 who is the bridge
Closeness

Advanced: eigenvector centrality and PageRank weigh the importance of the neighbours too (links to important nodes count for more).
One network, three answers
節點大小 = 中心性;橘色為前三名 size = centrality, orange = top three
Degree: who has the most ties?
Betweenness: who bridges the camps?
Closeness: who is nearest to everyone?
The rankings differ. Choosing a measure means choosing a kind of importance.
Clustering: are my neighbours also neighbours?
藍=所選節點;橘=鄰居與鄰居之間的邊 blue = chosen node, orange = its neighbours and their mutual edges
Look at one node’s neighbours: how many of them know each other?
High C: a tight clique. Low C: neighbours do not know each other, so this node may be a broker.
Advanced centrality measures
Not only how many ties, but who the ties lead to.
Eigenvector centrality
Important if connected to other well-connected nodes.
Katz 中心性Katz centrality
Direct and indirect ties, with a decay for distant nodes.
PageRankPageRank
Weighs the number and quality of links; designed for ranking web pages.
Harmonic centrality
Like closeness, but works on disconnected networks.
Historical networks are often disconnected because sources are incomplete: check connectivity before choosing a measure.
Communities: groups the network finds by itself
Modularity Q: how many more edges fall within groups than chance would give?
How is chance computed? Keep every node’s number of ties but rewire the edges at random. Well-connected nodes meet others more often: the expected number of edges between i and j is (ties of i × ties of j) ÷ (2 × total edges).
Q = share of edges that actually fall inside groups − share expected inside groups by chance (summed over groups). Q near 0 means the split is no better than random.
已知標籤 Q = ;演算法 Q = (越高,分群越清楚)Our labels vs. the algorithm: higher Q means a cleaner split
Structure, not sources, defines communities.
Graph layouts
The method that positions nodes and edges. It shapes readability, and what we think we see.
力導向Force-directed / spring
Nodes repel, edges act as springs.
圓形Circular
Nodes on a circle; good for comparing the same node set.
Moreno 1934, Who Shall Survive?: “Evolution of groups”, the same school class in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade
Moreno 與 Jennings(1930 年代):用圖表示學童之間「誰選了誰」。Moreno and Jennings, 1930s: drawing who chose whom among school children.
Triangles are boys, circles are girls; arrows are choices.
Among the earliest network diagrams in the social sciences, with positions arranged by hand.
He wanted to see the structure of a group “precisely”.
Beyond the picture: counting structures
Moreno 1934: sociogram of a kindergarten (15 boys, 18 girls) with tables of choices and structures
He already counts isolated children, mutual pairs, triangles and chains.
“Stars”, centres of attraction, are what we now call high degree.
Tables compare grades: shares of isolates and mutual pairs change with grade.
A new layout reveals new structure

Right: ties decide positions, and clusters and bridges emerge.
A layout is not evidence
The same data, drawn three ways:
Force-directed: nodes repel, edges pull like springs.
Only relative closeness means anything; axes carry no meaning. “Centre of the picture” is not “central”.
A good layout: fixed positions allow comparison
Chao et al. 2021, Fig. 7: 30 terms on a circle; left Liang Qichao, right Chen Duxiu; red edges are shared by both men.
Both graphs use identical node positions, so differences in edges are visible at once.
A force-directed layout would make the two graphs hard to compare.

Good habit: record the evidence for every edge, so you can go back to the source.
Co-occurrence: building edges from texts
Few relationships are recorded explicitly, but two names appearing together can be extracted at scale.
Same sentence? Same letter? Same document? How near is “together” is your choice.
The same problem as last week’s collocations: window, sentence, grammatical relation. The definition of the edge shapes the network.
De Weerdt et al.: names from the faction lists were tagged in contemporaries’ writings; co-occurrence counts as a “perceived tie”.
A trap: one list becomes a clique
3 names in one sentence
3 edges
5 names in one list

條「關係」,只因為一份名單“ties” created by a single list: 309 × 308 / 2
De Weerdt et al. therefore treat documents that merely reproduce the full list separately, not as evidence of relations.
Entity identity: one person, many names
A computer treats 蘇軾 and 蘇東坡 as two different nodes.
One person split into four small, weakly connected nodes
對應後 after resolution
One hub node: its degree jumps
The opposite error: different people with the same name merged into one
CBDBFix: a database with unique IDs (e.g. CBDB). In De Weerdt et al., 301 of 309 listees are in CBDB.
Missing relationships and uncertainty
No edge ≠ no relationship
Absence from the sources means no surviving evidence, not no relation.
The archive was selected
(Weingart)。A network of letters held in Oxford reflects what Oxford collected, not only who wrote to whom.
Ego-network sampling
Collect one person’s friends and that person is necessarily most central. Sampling shapes centrality.
Edges are uncertain
Same person? Friend or foe? Humanistic data are almost by definition uncertain.
So: document your decisions, and state in your conclusions what the network cannot see.
Is there a faction in this list?
De Weerdt, Ho, Wagner, Qiao & Chu (Journal of Chinese History, 2020)Large-scale network analysis of Song faction lists
A faction list names officials accused of forming a “faction” (pengdang) and punished by demotion, exile or bans from office. Some lists were promulgated by the court (the 1104 Yuanyou list, 309 names); others were privately compiled.
1104309 names · issued by the court
Targets officials of the Yuanyou period (1086–94) who had opposed the New Policies. Carved on stone steles and displayed in the capital and the prefectures under Cai Jing.
1142compiled privately
Names men persecuted under the chief councillor Qin Gui, who dominated the court during the peace with the Jurchen Jin. Assembled by later writers, not by the court.
119859 names · compiled privately
The “Prohibition of False Learning” under Han Tuozhou in the Qingyuan era (1195–1200). Its targets were Zhao Ruyu, Zhu Xi and followers of Daoxue (“Learning of the Way”). Names come from a later private record.
Question: were the people on these lists actually seen as connected by their contemporaries, or is “faction” an artefact of the list?
An old debate becomes a testable question: are listees mentioned together in contemporary writings?
How they did it
Starting from the three lists, they tagged every listee (and alias) in contemporaries’ writings, treated “named together” as a perceived tie, and compared the network structure of each list.

Shaoxing list
Does not look like a coalition; may reflect a victimization narrative based on reprisals under Qin Gui.
Qingyuan blacklist
Significantly denser and more clustered (49 of 59): a hierarchical coalition of intellectual and political clusters.
The bigger picture

Early Southern Song had a “talent-nurturing” policy: promising officials were first posted to the Imperial Library as a launchpad. Xiong follows the careers of its appointees and draws transfers between offices as a directed network, to see how the fast track actually worked.
Edges are directed and weighted; many offices turn out to be stepping-stones to the top.

Using CBDB kinship and learning ties, Bol finds that marriage became almost entirely local while a learning network still connected literati across the prefecture.

Kinship ties became more local, and cross-prefecture kinship declined.

共現 = 關係嗎?Does co-occurrence equal a relationship?
Armand & Henriot (2021). A co-occurrence network overstates relations and clustering; many people are mentioned only as historical context.
Ego networks: starting from one person
Levine (2021). In the 1920s many Chinese revolutionaries trained in Europe and the USSR. Levine builds a dataset of 133 leaders and uses network and geographic methods to separate a Euro-Soviet and a Soviet group, and to find important but lesser-known figures.

133 revolutionary leaders trained in Europe and the USSR in the 1920s; two groups and key actors emerge.
Reminder (Weingart): in an ego network the ego is necessarily the most central.
A two-mode network in practice
Arnold & Rudolph (2021). ECPO is Heidelberg’s database of Republican-era periodicals. This is a database paper: it shows how network data can be derived from periodical content (persons, articles, ads, organisations, images) and discusses privacy for twentieth-century actors.

Edges link nodes of different types (e.g. person ↔ article).
Rich, but most algorithms assume one mode: project to one mode or use methods built for multimodal data.
Where the data come from: databases and tools
CBDBChina Biographical Database
470,000+ individuals; kinship and social networks can be queried.
Bingenheimer: Chinese Buddhism
c. 17,500 actors and 25,000 links, late 3rd to early 20th century.
ECPOEarly Chinese Periodicals Online
Republican-era periodicals and biographical data; also discusses privacy.
Wikipedia biographies (ENP-China)
228,144 Chinese biographies, with NLP-extracted entities.
Databases help with entity identity and extraction at scale; defining the edge is still your job.
Two warnings (Weingart)
When you have a hammer…
Easy tools and available datasets make it tempting to network everything.
Ask: is this question really about relations?
Methodology appropriation is dangerous
Algorithms were built for other purposes; their assumptions and caveats get lost in translation.
Ask: what does this measure mean on my data?
Today: learn the tools, and learn when not to trust them.
A network is an abstraction
The Network Turn, ch. 1: networks are always metaphorical, reducing a rich world to points and lines.

Weingart: humanists care about what makes things unique, which is exactly what is lost when objects become nodes.
Beyond guanxi
Chen & Rudolph, “Beyond Relationships and Guanxi: An Introduction” (2021)
問題The problem
Treating guanxi as a millennia-old “Chinese” trait is ahistorical and culturalist.
The alternative
Reconstruct relations and analyse structure, comparing periods and groups.
Historical actors had a sense of networks too (“entwined roots”), but saw an indecipherable whole.
Modern analysts presume structure can be teased out: define scope, partition, count links and distances.
Network analysis is a modern scientification of relations; the truth lies in between, so stay aware of your assumptions.
What does centrality mean on your data?
Degree ≈ frequency
In co-occurrence networks, frequently mentioned people co-occur with more people: degree tracks frequency.
Longer text, more central
In a document-similarity network, longer books are more likely to share topics with others.
Sampling decides
An ego network makes the ego central; add more data and the ranking can change.
Two-mode networks
In an author–publisher network, degree just counts publications, not social position.
First ask what this number could mean in your data. Then interpret.
Before you build a network, ask
